Position Description:

Eng Automation & Controls-Level I SCADA

Responsible for performing and/or assisting in the design, integration,

configuration, maintenance, security, and commissioning of process

control & monitoring equipment & systems related to water treatment and

distribution and wastewater treatment and collection.

Additional responsibilities include, educating company employees on

process control systems, ensuring compliance to Company process control

standards and practices, applying new technologies, and process control

system project management as required.

Perform quality assurance checks of process control systems as required.

Key Accountabilities:

Collaborate on the design, review, information gathering, inspection,

and commissioning / start-up of projects that include process control

equipment or systems. Perform the configuration/programming for process

control systems, make changes to existing programs, review and approve

programming by integrators and functional operation of all process

control systems, participate in factory witness testing, and coordinate

process control system issues between project engineering,

instrumentation contractor, and American Water management. (45%)

Review existing control logic and implement programming changes to

control treatment and pumping processes in the most efficient manner.

Perform or coordinate required maintenance on process control equipment

or systems.

Troubleshoot and resolve control system issues.

Perform software upgrades, adding new facilities, replacement of

hardware and software.

Develop and maintain relationship with Process Control vendors to keep

current with changes in operational control systems.

Assist local operations with the creation and administration of budgets

to install, maintain and replace process control equipment.

Coordinate / provide technical training for company personnel within

service territory to maintain / enhance technical skill sets of local


Provide support for Controls Specialist staff members as required. (45%)

Ensure that strong change management practices are followed regarding

the Process Control systems.

Enforce AW Process Control system life

cycle practices. Make recommendations to change standards and methods

to improve processes and results (10%)


Bachelor's degree in Engineering.

Additional experience and/or certifications may be substituted for

formal education.


Strong knowledge of P&IDs, control elementary drawings, ISA instrument

specifications, and loop diagrams.

Working knowledge of industrial control system platforms including PLC /

DCS / HMI programming / design / configuration. Alan Bradley

Knowledge of process computers and data collection methods.

Understanding of PC Networking technology, telemetry methods and

historical archiving databases.

Strong knowledge of project management and application development

methodologies and tools.

Knowledge of business applications, Microsoft Office products and

productivity tools (e.g. MS Word, MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Lotus



Minimum four (4) years of experience in the design, configuration,

installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of Process

Control Systems (SCADA and DCS).

Experience in all phases of project implementation: design generation,

system integration, documentation, project start-up and commissioning.

Experience with data communications systems, protocols, wired and

wireless network systems, and radio telemetry.
